Monbijou is a historic monument built in 1812, designed by Louis Michel Thibault. This remarkable venue features stunning examples of Cape and European art and antiques, showcasing exhibitions from prominent artists. Join us to experience art in an unforgettable setting.
At present Monbijou is in a state of disrepair, owing to serious neglect by the appointed administrator. The building was maintained by Sir Alfred Beit in the early 1900's, and was fully restored by Dr Helmut Silberberg after the 1969 earthquake in Tulbagh.
It is envisaged that once the current administrator has been replaced, the building will be restored to its original splendour, and will host again an impressive range of exhibitions featuring prominent artists and unique artworks. Carefully curated collections will be designed and assembled to inspire and educate art enthusiasts of all backgrounds.
Step inside Monbijou, an exquisite architectural masterpiece built in 1812, where history and art converge. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage and stunning collections that celebrate both Cape and European art.
Currently Monbijou is administered by STBB, the law firm, and has fallen into disrepair.
This site will document the history and reconstruction of this significant building
